Keto diet or ketogenic diet is one of the many diets regimen that gained popularity in the past few years. It is a diet composed of 90% fat and 10% carbohydrates and proteins. It works in simple words by depriving your body of the main source of energy which is normally carbohydrates and this leads the body to rely on the fat by converting it to something called ketone bodies and hence the name.
Is it a good or a bad diet? In this article we will state the pros and cons of the keto diet
PROS:
1. Effective: many people experience significant weight loss in a short amount of time other than other diets regimen.
2. Enjoyable: you are essentially eating food containing fat which is most of the fun food that you try to avoid in other diets.
3. Full: with other diets you may feel that you are still hungry but with keto diet you don't have this problem.
CONS:
1. Heart affection: a recent study showed that keto diet cause increase in cholesterol and LDL which is bad fats that cause heart vessels and other vessels narrowing.
2. Sleepiness: people on keto diet often experience a sensation of foggy brain and sleepiness because of lack of carbohydrates which is the food of the brain.
3. Vitamin deficiency: a lot of people on keto diet have vitamin deficiency and malnourished because depend mainly on fat which doesn't contain vitamins.
4. Liver affection: in keto diet the liver receive too much fat to metabolise which may worsen existing problems.
5. Not studied: keto diet was meant as a treatment method for children with seizures. It was not studied to be a form of long term diet and it's long term complications is not studied extensively.
6. Rebound: when stopping the keto diet, people usually gain weight very fast.
7. Constipation: lack of vegetables cause constipation.
7. Expensive: eating a lot of fat comes at a cost since most of the expensive food composes of food.
